In this conversation with Mature Magazine writer India Young-Johnson, we dive into the inspiration behind Marviano Cosmetics, the challenges of building a Black-owned beauty brand, and the balance between being a CEO and a digital creator. Marvella Akiojano shares the trials and triumphs of product development, the importance of engaging with their audience, and the future vision for the brand. With a focus on creating smudge-proof, waterproof lip liners that truly last, Marviano Cosmetics is setting a new standard in the industry—one rooted in experience, community, and a refusal to settle for anything less than the best.

Can you share your journey from Nigeria to becoming a digital creator and entrepreneur in Dallas?

I started as a dancer, but after moving to the United States, I lost my passion for creating dance videos and even dancing in general. As I got older, my curiosity grew, leading me to explore new interests. I started doing hair with my mom to make money, and when wigs became really popular, I learned how to do my own. That eventually turned into providing hair services for my classmates and creating hair videos. The same thing happened with makeup and fashion; I kept learning, experimenting, and sharing my journey. And now, here I am.

What inspired you to launch Marviano Cosmetics, and how did you identify the need for smudge-proof and waterproof lip liners?

I initially wanted to start a bag brand, but the costs were much higher than expected, so I put that idea on pause and kept living my life. Then, I got lip fillers, which ended up going viral and it became the perfect opportunity to launch a lippie. I got them because I wanted a more defined Cupid’s bow. Prior to this I noticed that every time I lined my lips, the liner would fade into patchy, thin lines before I even reached my destination. My friends had the same issue constantly taking bathroom breaks to reapply their lip liner. Realizing I wasn’t the only one dealing with this, I went into full research mode, testing different formulas for months before launching my own. I don’t believe in gatekeeping, so I made sure to create something that truly worked.

As a Black-owned beauty brand, how does Marviano Cosmetics approach inclusivity and representation in its product offerings?

Marviano Cosmetics is built on real inclusivity, not just as a trend but as our foundation. As a Black-owned brand, we know the struggle of finding shades that truly complement all skin tones, especially deeper ones. Even with limited resources, we’re committed to creating high-quality, long-wearing products that work for everyone. From our formulas to our marketing, we make sure everyone sees themselves in Marviano because beauty should include everybody.

What challenges did you face while establishing Marviano Cosmetics, and how did you overcome them?

Starting Marviano Cosmetics came with its challenges, but each one taught me something valuable. My first bulk order was completely messed up by the manufacturer, and I lost over $5,000. I had to take it to the chin, seek funding, and lean on prayer, trusting that God had a bigger plan. When orders started pouring in, it became overwhelming, but I found a way of outsourcing with the help of my friends. Every setback pushed me to adapt, stay resilient, and keep going.

How do you balance your roles as a content creator and CEO?

Balancing my roles as a content creator and CEO is definitely a struggle, but I make it work by dedicating specific time to each. I try to focus on my business during certain hours and give attention to my personal brand at other times. It’s a constant juggling act, but I'm still figuring it out and improving every day. The key is staying organized and being flexible when things don’t go as planned.

Can you give us a glimpse into the product development process at Marviano Cosmetics?

Can you give us a glimpse into the product development process at Marviano cosmetics?

At Marviano Cosmetics, we don’t just slap a label on any formula. I personally tested 4-5 manufacturers who claimed to have ‘long-lasting’ formulas, only to find out they were just like regular lip liners. Frustrated but determined, I invested more time, money, and research until I found the one—our current supplier. And let me tell you, when I say it doesn't move, I mean it! We thank God for the process, because now Marviano lip liners truly deliver on their promise.

What has been the most rewarding experience since launching your brand?

The most rewarding experience since launching Marviano Cosmetics has been seeing the girls genuinely satisfied with the products. When I see them loving the liners and how long they last just like they’re supposed to it’s incredibly fulfilling. Knowing that I put out something that actually works and makes people feel good about themselves is the best feeling.

How do you engage with your audience and incorporate their feedback into your products?

Marviano Cosmetics is built on real feedback from real people. I’m always engaging with my audience, whether it’s through comments, DMs, or polls because I want to know exactly what you need. When we were developing our lip liners, I tested multiple formulas and even had some of my followers weigh in on what makes the perfect liner. I even asked if they preferred wooden or retractable liners before making my final decision! The result? A formula that actually lasts and lives up to the hype. The input is everything, and I’m always listening to make sure Marviano always gives products that truly work!

What future plans do you have for Marviano Cosmetics?

The future of Marviano Cosmetics is exciting! I’m working on expanding our product line with new lip glosses and blushes, which I’m really excited about. I’m also considering creating something special for the men, because I believe everyone deserves high-quality beauty products that cater to their needs. It’s all about continuing to grow and offer more to our amazing customers!

What advice would you give to aspiring entrepreneurs and content creators looking to make their mark?

What advice would you give to aspiring entrepreneurs?

My biggest advice to aspiring entrepreneurs? Just start. Don’t wait for the ‘perfect’ moment because it doesn’t exist. I know it’s scary, but fear won’t pay your bills—action will. Don’t do it alone either; find a community, ask for help, and surround yourself with people who believe in you. Pray through every step because guidance from God will take you further than hustle alone. And most importantly, remember that growth comes from experience, not perfection. Start, learn, adjust, and keep going!

What does Mature mean to you?

To me, maturity means understanding life at a faster pace while also knowing when to slow down and pace yourself. It’s about taking on responsibilities with confidence and handling challenges headstrong, all while growing and evolving along the way. It’s the ability to balance confidence with humility, learn from experiences, and grow through them, while remaining grounded and intentional in your decisions.
