‘Tis the season for black-tie-affairs, festive and fancy galas, and more holiday events that call for ditching the jeans and dressing up. This weekend marks the inaugural Big Red Ball, downtown Lansing’s first-ever black-tie-ball promising stunning views and seasonal revelry. The Saturday, Dec. 7th event is also a fundraiser for Downtown Lansing Inc., and will help focus efforts on investing into the region’s central business district.

If you often feel overwhelmed when it comes to shopping for the perfect outfit for these special occasions, you’re not alone! Mature Magazine Contributor Sarah Spohn interviewed Mature Magazine Editor-in-Chief and Celebrity Fashion Stylist Oliver Brown to share some great tips on how to make the process more fun, and you guessed it — more stylish. Feel free to use these tips when getting ready for the Big Red Ball, or refer back to them to help elevate your look at a future event!

First, tell us a little bit about yourself and your background in styling?

Oliver Brown: My journey in styling started right in my living room. I worked with local creatives, models, hair stylists, and makeup artists to create powerful fashion-forward images. I did this for about two years before taking a chance on my first editorial shoot in NYC, which ended up being published. After two years of working with magazines and finding my voice as a stylist, I transitioned to celebrity styling. My first celebrity client was singer Dawn Richard during the pandemic. From there, I slowly built my portfolio, working with amazing talents like Kandi Burruss, Steelo Brim, and Tahj Mowry, among others.

What are some of your most memorable styling moments and those 'pinch me' moments that you can't believe you've already had in your career thus far?

My first Harper’s Bazaar cover with Cynthia Bailey was absolutely magical. The final cover is still one of my favorites — it’s stunning and holds a special place in my heart. But honestly, it’s so hard to pick just one moment because there have been so many experiences that feel like a dream come true.

What's your favorite part about styling?

Seeing people’s reactions when they wear something they didn’t think would work for them. Watching their excitement when they look in the mirror and are blown away by how they feel — it never gets old.

As folks are getting ready for the Big Red Ball in Downtown Lansing, what are three styling tips that are helpful for everyone?

When preparing for events like the Big Red Ball, it’s essential to focus on your body type and highlight the part of yourself you love most. Whether it’s your legs, waist, or arms, dressing to emphasize your favorite features will always make you feel confident and radiant. Finish off your look with a signature fragrance, like Maison Francis Kurkdjian Baccarat Rouge, to leave a lasting impression — even if the conversation doesn’t stick, your scent will. And when in doubt, go with black — it’s timeless, chic, and universally flattering, making it a fool-proof option for any formal occasion.

Many people are intimidated by high-fashion, and getting dressed up. They're lost and don't know where to start. What advice do you have for folks who aren't used to dressing up but want to give it a whirl?

Fit is everything! Clothes that are too big or too tight can ruin the look, so know your measurements and consider working with a tailor. Don’t be afraid to take risks — everyone loves a Cinderella moment, and dressing up should make you feel special and unforgettable.

What tips do you have to share that can help the experience become less overwhelming?

When putting together a look, start with a color you love and feel confident wearing — it simplifies the process and ensures you feel great. Focus on highlighting one part of your body that you want to emphasize, such as your waist, neckline, or legs, and build your outfit around that feature. Most importantly, choose pieces that make you feel good and reflect your personality. Don’t overthink it — confidence is the ultimate accessory that completes any look.

So many of us have a love-hate relationship with the fitting rooms. Clingy material, unflattering lighting, etc. can create an atmosphere that feels defeating and less than enjoyable. What tips do you have to ensure the experience is more enjoyable?

To make fitting room experiences more enjoyable, bring along a friend whose opinion you trust — they can offer support and make the process more fun. Take selfies instead of relying on harsh store lighting; it’s a great way to see how the outfit truly looks. And if you’re still unsure, consider consulting a stylist for personalized advice — they can help you find the perfect fit and style to suit your body and the occasion.

Not everyone is ready to go out and buy an entire new wardrobe for a one-night-only-event. What advice do you have for folks who are looking to put together a brand-new outfit out of pieces they already have in their closet?

Thrifting is always a great option for finding unique, budget-friendly pieces. Also, revisit your own closet — you might have forgotten about something amazing hiding in the back. Go for pieces that make you feel confident and timeless rather than chasing trends.

What are your tips for an outfit that 'feels high-fashion' but is still within a reasonable budget?

Start with a simple base, like a classic dress or suit from your closet, and elevate it with bold accessories. Statement jewelry, standout shoes, or a chic bag can transform any outfit. Professional hair and makeup can also take your look to the next level without breaking the bank.

What's a no-fail, go-to tip you have that will help people instantly elevate someone's look?

Undergarments! They smooth and refine your silhouette, making everything look polished and tailored — for both men and women.

Anything else you'd like to add?

Fashion is about expressing yourself and having fun. Don’t be afraid to take risks, embrace what makes you, and remember that confidence is your best accessory
